US Imposed Tariffs: Former US President Donald Trump has placed an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from Mexico and Canada. However, Canadian energy products have received a slightly lower tariff of 10%.
Justin Trudeau on US Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose term is ending soon, held a press conference on March 4 to criticize Trump’s tariff decision. Trudeau called the US tariffs a foolish move and accused Trump of starting a trade war with Canada to please Russia.
He stated, “President Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Canada. In response, Canada will impose counter-tariffs on $100 billion worth of US goods.”
Trudeau’s Anger Over Trump’s Decision
Expressing his frustration, Trudeau said, “Today, the United States has declared a trade war against its closest partner, ally, and friend—Canada. Meanwhile, they talk about working positively with Russia, where President Vladimir Putin is a liar and a ruthless dictator. Trump wants to please him. Does this make any sense?”
Trump’s decision to impose extra taxes on three of the US’s biggest trading partners—Mexico, Canada, and China—has led to retaliatory tariffs from these nations. This has caused instability in financial markets.
US Tariff Impact on Canada
Trump announced the tariffs in the middle of the night, imposing a 25% tax on Canadian and Mexican goods. However, Canadian energy products were subjected to only a 10% tax.
Trudeau Accuses Trump of Trying to Control Canada
Trudeau went even further by saying, “Trump wants to destroy Canada’s economy so that he can merge it into the US. But this will never happen. We will never become the 51st state of America.”
Addressing Trump directly, Trudeau said, “I want to speak directly to that American man, Donald. I don’t always agree with The Wall Street Journal, but they are right this time. Donald, you may be a very smart man, but this decision is extremely foolish.”
