Rohit Sharma is showing strong commitment to Indian domestic cricket and is keen to return not only to the List-A format but also to T20 cricket. According to media reports, the former T20 International captain wants to participate in the knockout phase of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025.
A report from the Times of India suggests that the ‘Hitman’ has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his desire to play in the domestic T20 tournament.
The Timing and Context
Rohit Sharma has expressed his wish to join the knockout stages of the SMAT after the conclusion of the upcoming India vs. South Africa ODI series.
This decision is notable because Rohit announced his retirement from T20 International cricket almost a year and a half ago. This move highlights his dedication to supporting Mumbai’s domestic side.
In related news, both Rohit and Virat Kohli have reportedly agreed to play in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament. However, there is no current update on whether Virat Kohli will also play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Mumbai Team in SMAT
The Mumbai team is placed in Elite Group A in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 and has already won four out of its five matches.
The Mumbai side is currently being captained by Shardul Thakur. Other well-known players in the squad include Ajinkya Rahane, Sarfaraz Khan, and Ayush Mhatre. Suryakumar Yadav has also featured for Mumbai in this tournament in the past.
