The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan, with the first match between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Stadium, Karachi. This is Pakistan’s first ICC event in 29 years, with the last one being the 1996 Cricket World Cup. However, just before the tournament, the situation in the region has become tense due to the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict.
Pakistan Launches Airstrikes on Afghanistan
For the first time, Afghanistan is participating in the Champions Trophy and had arrived in Pakistan on February 12. However, on February 16, Pakistan carried out airstrikes on Afghanistan. According to media reports, at 6 PM, Pakistan targeted terrorist hideouts in Paktika and Barmal. Additionally, it attacked Shawal in North Waziristan.
Reports also suggest a clash between Pakistani security forces and Taliban fighters in Lalpur district, Nangarhar.
100 People Killed in Airstrikes
According to Kabul Frontline News Agency, Pakistan’s airstrike on Waziristan resulted in the death of 100 civilians. Bombs hit residential areas, causing massive destruction. One family in South Waziristan lost 8 members in the attack.
With the Champions Trophy just a few hours away, this conflict has raised serious concerns about the security arrangements for the tournament.
