Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, Team India recently won its first ODI series. India defeated England 3-0 in the home series, with Indian batsmen performing exceptionally well. Shreyas Iyer, batting at number four, scored 181 runs, including two fifties. Initially, Iyer was not part of the playing XI, but he got an opportunity after Virat Kohli was injured. Iyer made full use of this chance, scoring at an average of 60.33.
Heated Argument Between Gambhir and Agarkar
According to a Times of India report, there was a heated argument between Gautam Gambhir and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar over Iyer’s selection. The main reason for this disagreement was that Gambhir wanted a left-right combination in the middle order. The report also claimed that under Gambhir’s leadership, the team management ignored Agarkar’s preferences and regularly included KL Rahul in the playing XI.
Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir United
Last month, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar stated in a Champions Trophy squad press conference that Rishabh Pant was the first-choice wicketkeeper for the ODI team. However, Captain Rohit Sharma and Coach Gautam Gambhir decided to play KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper in the series against England.
In the Champions Trophy press conference, Gautam Gambhir said, “It is difficult to comment on individual players. I can only say that Pant is part of the team and will get opportunities. But for now, KL Rahul is our first-choice wicketkeeper and has been performing consistently.”
